Back to the county fair shows to build up the breed's foundation.

Strengthening Our Roots • One-Day Horse Shows

A child excitedly has the chance to attend the county fair. Rides, food, and entertainment are all part of the thrill, but even more so is the opportunity to experience the many animals exhibited at the county fair shows.

County fair horse shows are an integral part to the larger breed organizations many adults and children are involved in today. These county fairs and open horse shows spark the interest and set individuals on a path that allow them the opportunity to gain experience, knowledge, and connections that could lead to bigger shows and more involvement in breed organizations.

As the superintendent of a county fair horse show, I see this one day show as an important part of many adult’s and children’s show seasons. For some, this is the culmination of their 4-H project, their first step into the larger aspect of showing. For others, it is a way to gain points, practice, or experience for other events. Regardless of the reason for showing, this one day show brings individuals of all breeds together and celebrates the horses and horse owners.

Our show is a great example of diversity as well as cost efficiency. A local foundation has provided classes for youth in ag programs at no cost and are intermixed with the county fair classes which have an entry fee as well as payback. Multiple breeds and disciplines are given the opportunity to be shown and judged both individually and corporately which allows for the horses to be celebrated for their unique attributes and abilities. We also love the aspect that our judge can give specific feedback and build relationships encouraging especially those who are young and growing.

While you may not see the next national champion at a one day show, you may see the next owner or rider looking for the opportunity to get started, to learn more, and to find the breed that is going to take them on their journey. Embracing all levels of the horse industry will not only allow for a stronger community but also a place for every person and horse to be successful and loved.
