The Legendary *Morafic

The legendary Morafic (Nazeer x Mabrouka by Sid Abouhm x Moniet El Nefous), in a rarely seen, relaxed photograph from 1968. Courtesy of Arlene Magid Pedigree Research (A. M. Williams). A neat find today of one of the 3 most influential stallions and sire-lines breeding on around the world, the other two being another Nazeer son, Aswan (x Yosreia by Sheikh El Arab) and Image (Mirage x *Rifala by Skowronek) from the Selby Stud.

Imported by Doug and Margaret Marshall of Gleannloch Farm in 1965, this former chief sire of the EAO, left 56 foals in Egypt and sired another 151 in the US before his passing in 1974. Tom and Rhita McNair, long time friends, managers and trainers for the Marshall’s at their farm, helped shape the Gleannloch breeding program and show string for decades. I credit them for proving that the new Egyptians imported and bred by the Marshall’s were not just National’s winners in halter, but they were National’s winners in virtually every performance division that was offered at the time. Due in no small part to the McNairs and their horsemanship and breeding expertise.

For the newer folks, *Morafic is the sire line behind Ali Jamaal (Ruminaja Ali x Heritage Memory by El Magato), *El Shaklan (Shaker El Masri x Estopa by Tabal), *Gazal Al Shaqab (Anaza El Farid x Kajora by Kaborr+++), *Gazal’s son *Marwan Al Shaqab (x Little Liza Fame by Fame VF+) and *Marwan’s son, QR Marc (x Swete Dreams by Magic Dream). In perpetuity, these stallions have shaped our show rings and breeding programs for years now, with no sign of their influence letting up.

The most important and long lasting programs around the world, from the Maxwell’s of Lodge Farm to King Hassan II of Morocco to Marieta Salas of Ses Planes all utilized *Morafic sire-lines to incredible success. Also included in this group are the Polish State Studs, Al Shaqab and Om El Arab all stood major breeding and show stallions of this sire-line and this sire-line is still a major part of their programs today. The late, great Lenita Perroy of Haras Meia Lua and her counterpart in Argentina, Count Federico Zychy-Thyssen and Antonio Gutierrez Prieto of Mexico all bred *Morafic on to world wide acclaim. The Nagib and Adelia Audi program in Brazil sits at this table and they gave so, so much to Brazilian breeding and their influence is still felt today.

*Morafic’s straight Egyptian influence is just as deep, in the US and around the world. Imperial Egyptian Stud, Serenity Farm, Ansata Arabian Stud, Rock Creek Arabians, Silver Maple Farm, Bentwood Farms and Sahiby Stud of South Africa all incorporated *Morafic into their breeding programs. Talaria Farms, Simeon Stud, Al Badeia Stud of Egypt (heavinly hugs, Nasr Marei), Ariela Arabians in Israel and the “mother land,” the Egyptian Agricultural Orgranization, still carry *Morafic in their programs. Just one branch of the *Morafic sire-line, through The Minstril (Ruminaja Ali x *Bahila by Ibn Galal I) and his son Thee Desperado+ (x AK Amiri Asmaar by The Egyptin Prince (also by *Morafic)), can be found in at least 80% of straight Egyptian breeding in the US today.

If I had to pick 3 of each, my all time personal favorites from the Morafic legacy would include ZT Sharuby (ZT Sharello x ZT Bint Ruby by Ansata El Mabrouk), Gelgelah Albadeia (Imperial Madori x Anhar Albadeia by Ameer Albadeia) and Atlantica (El Shaklan x Aliha by Indian Silver) for mares. All Champions around the world and all as exquisite as they come. For males, my picks are Marajj (*Marwan Al Shaqab x RGA Kouress by Kouvey Bey), Encore Ali (Ali Jamaal x My Mavica by *Muscat) and Ibn Estopa (Shaker El Masri x Estopa by Tabal), *El Shaklan’s younger brother. All stallions who caught my attention years ago and still have it in pedigree’s today. These six horses, along with a few hundred or more of their caliber, have bred on and will keep the *Morafic legend alive and well for as long as I can foresee.
